FROM THE EDITORS

James C. Grotting, MD, FACS

I am very pleased to be the lead editor for this exceptional issue of Plastic Surgery Pulse News. It is rich with new and thought-provoking content from the latest techniques in aesthetic medicine to the best for the business side of your practice. Our Features section includes an interesting application of fat grafting for congenital deformities by the chairman of the plastic and reconstructive surgery division of the University of California--San Francisco, Dr. William Hoffman, as well as a discussion of the variables that can affect postbariatric body contouring by Dr. Joseph Capella. A way of delaying the conventional TRAM flap reconstruction by embolization is described by Dr. Bruno Laurent and his colleagues, and our Brazilian correspondent, Dr. Fabio Nahas, along with his colleagues, have contributed his latest research into collagen content in the rectus muscle.

Our What's Hot section includes an exciting new design for saline breast implants, the Ideal Implant, developed by Dr. Robert Hamas, which is now undergoing clinical trials. Also, Dr. Paul Lorenc sheds light on the spectrum of fillers and how to choose the best one for specific indications. Some interesting new procedures are described in Focus on Technique. Dr. Darryl Hodgkinson from Sydney, Australia, discusses his thoughts on the vertical suspension of the platysma for neck contouring, and Dr. Geoffrey Keyes explains how to control shape in the tip of the nose using a closed approach. I have written about the addition-subtraction approach for correcting breast asymmetry, the history of which goes back to Dr. Ricardo Baroudi in 1976 and Drs. Paule Regnault and Rollin Daniel in 1988 for augmentation mastopexy.

We continue to be a vehicle for providing information on patient safety with Dr. Claude Oppikofer writing about checklists in the operating room for avoiding mishaps. Finally, we keep you updated on new coding standards summarized by Steven Stout and Marie Czenko-Kuechel describing the model practice. Finally, Dr. Constantino Mendieta tells us about the latest in gluteal sculpting in our Technology Update.

We hope you enjoy this issue of Pulse News and send us your feedback on how you like it and how you use it.
